![]() ![]() If it’s a good adaptation, it’ll be able to stand on its own without any prior knowledge of what it’s based on, and Gankustuou certainly stands perfectly fine by itself. I haven’t read the original story, and I don’t know how close this adaptation hues to the original plot (I’ve been told of a couple things it changes, such as Franz and Eugenie’s characters being altered and the story starting in a different place), but that’s not really of much concern to me. I’m aware that The Count of Monte Cristo is a story from the 19th century, written by a Frenchman long before the idea of animation itself ever existed. There’s an aspect of Gankutsuou I haven’t really touched on yet, because I’ve been mulling over what I feel about it the fact that it’s an adaptation.
